Doc proudly served his country as a Marine in Vietnam. After he returned, he worked in the woods with his father cutting and hauling pulpwood. Doc had several different jobs in his career. He worked offshore with Rowan Companies as well as for the power line companies Red Simpson and Kulaga Construction. Doc worked in the logging business, which is where he worked with M.C. Ashworth, who became his best friend later in life. The job he enjoyed the most was running bulldozers and control burning the woods with C&C Dozer. Doc was able to work side-by-side with his brother, and sidekick, Marvin Calcote.
An avid outdoorsmen, Doc enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working his cows. He took great pride in having a healthy, good-looking herd. He could spend all day outside checking on his cows, horses, and chickens. Before his health became too bad, he would be at McKee’s every day at lunchtime with his brother Marvin, solving the world’s problems. Doc was very proud of all his children and grandchildren.
